Greetings Poker Sharks,
About five weeks ago we updated you on the two “Rags to Riches” poker bot challenges taking place in our support forum. Member “cosmo27” is using the Holdem Bot and member “Royal” has been using our Omaha bots. Both players started with a zero bankroll (by playing in freerolls), and are following strict bankroll management rules in an effort to build 4-figure accounts from scratch. They are both only using the bot to play for them, never interfering themselves. We thought it was time for another update.
Both cosmo and Royal concentrated heavily on the recent Mini-FTOPS tournaments at Full Tilt, using satellites to springboard their way into the higher-buyin events. They had mixed results.
HOLDEM BOT CHALLENGE UPDATE
Last time we updated you, cosmo had turned a zero account balance into about $250 after 2 months. His bankroll rules don’t allow him to play more than the smallest buy-in MTT’s with that amount, so it’s been a slow grinding process for him – and quite a roller-coaster ride lately. However he is making progress. A couple of weeks ago he was up to $700, but since has run into a bad streak and is now back to just under $600.
Reading his thread you can really feel the pains of his recent dry spell. He has a way of writing that pulls you into the experience. However I would remind cosmo (and you) that just five weeks ago he had only $250. And lets’ not forget that he started with nothing and now has over $500 just three months later, and never played a hand of poker himself!
Moreover, the toughest part of these challenges is getting off the ground — and then making it to the first $1,000. If he can hang in there I’m certain things will get easier at that point, as evidenced by Royal’s challenge.
OMAHA BOT CHALLENGE UPDATE
The short version of this update is: It’s over. That’s right, done. No, he didn’t go broke! He reached his goal – and in grand fashion at that. But not the way that he thought he was going to reach it.
This is really an amazing story and if you have a spare 10 or 15 minutes I highly recommend reading the entire thread. You can share in the aggravations of the slow, sputtering start and then in the occasional elation of making a deep high-paying finish.
Last time we updated you Royal had amassed about $4500 in 5 months time. His goal was $10,000. Last week he finally hit the finish line – only he didn’t just hit it, he obliterated it with a deep final-table finish that pushed his account over $12,000. This happened after a very frustrating Mini-FTOPS where he just couldn’t get anything going. So he satellited his way into a big weekly event where he proceeded to catch a white-hot run of cards, and the rest is history.
So here is a guy that started with a zero account balance and hit the freerolls, then parlayed his way to $12,000+ in six months time just by using a poker bot. Keep in mind that with the auto-starters we have in the marketplace these days (like keiths’ Bot Commander) you don’t even have to be around to put the bot in the tournament. You can sign up for an MTT that starts in 5 hours, go to work, and the software takes care of everything.
There are some real lessons to be learned here. Many of us need to stop fighting the futile battles that we have chosen for ourselves at the poker rooms and start accepting what they are giving away. Bankroll management is the real key here. The same profiles that these guys are using are available to everyone, so it’s just a matter of determination really. You don’t even need any money to get started.
I recommend reading the entire threads of both these challenges so you can get a feel for the ups and downs, see where they both got frustrated and almost gave up, and learn the value of hanging in there and following a well-conceived plan.
